Dealing With Damage To Your Windshield While Away From Home

Windshield damage can be a big issue if there is a crack or break that crosses the driver's view through the glass. It is illegal to drive with this kind of damage in many states, so a windshield replacement needs to be a priority for safety and legal concerns. Damage that occurs while you are on a road trip and away from home can be more challenging, but there are resources available to help deal with this situation and get your glass repair done quickly.

Mobile Repair

If you are in an area that you are unfamiliar with, you may not know where to find an auto glass repair shop in the area to do a windshield replacement for you. One resource you can use to find a glass service is your auto insurance company. If you call and let them know what the situation is, where you are, and what you need help with, they should be able to locate a mobile windshield replacement service that they work with for you.

The insurance agent may call the service for you or give you the information to contact them and see if they are available to do an emergency windshield replacement for you. In some cases, stopping at a truck stop or travel plaza and having the service done there can benefit you by allowing you to get a meal, fuel, or other things you need and having the glass repair done at the same time.

Local Repair Shops

If you cannot get mobile windshield replacement in the area, you may need to go to the auto glass shop and have them replace the glass there. Call ahead and let the repair shop know what has happened and that you are passing through the area.

In some cases, the shop can prioritize your repair as an emergency repair if they have the glass, or at least fit you into the schedule that same day so that you are not delayed too long. If the damage is not too bad and you can still drive the vehicle, you might want to wait until you reach a larger town or city to have the repair made. However, it is essential to remember that the crack can spread and get worse with road vibrations and bumps and could spread into the driver's view, even if it didn't start there.

Roadside Service Clubs

If you are a member of a roadside service club, you may want to call them and see if they can expedite the repair for you. The network shops that work with these clubs often prioritize repairs for club members. You may also get a discount on the windshield replacement with your membership on both mobile and local windshield replacement work.
